Hacking Democracy

Posted on Sunday 5 November 2006

An HBO documentary about electronic voting machines is on Google Video. Worth a watch.

Some interesting bits:

According to Cliff Arnebeck, an elections attorney present during the conference call, John Kerry told Jesse Jackson on election night 2004, after he had already conceded, that in New Mexico, votes that were counted with optical scan readers, regardless of the regional demographics, were coming out for Bush.

Electronic voting machines in Volusia County Florida registered negative 10,000 votes for Gore in 2000. Yes, negative votes. After the polls closed and they printed out the total from the machine, Gore had a negative total. What do you do about that? Have a new election?

Apparently, the memory card for the voting machines contains executable code. They got a security expert that was able to write code that rigged a pretend election, just by having access to the memory card before the election. With touch screen voting, there’s absolutely no evidence that a fraud has been committed.
